As a kid when I was first exposed to Classic Hindi Songs of Bollywood I used to think there were only six singers who sang songs in old Hindi films : Kishore Kumar, Mohammed Rafi, Mukesh, Talat Mahmood, Hemanta Kumar and Manna Dey.
Of course there was no Internet and no Mobile mp3 downloads when i was a kid and so my knowledge about music was limited. While growing up I got to know, largely from my parents, that their live shows were huge draws and unlike most of today’s shows the singers actually used to SING on stage and not lip sync.
Today with the passing away of Manna Dey, now we have lost all of the 6 Legendary Singers of Independent India. And in spite of today’s twitter, facebook, linkedin, whatsapp and BBM updates, it was my mother who was the first person to inform me about the sad demise of Manna Dey. My parents have lost their soul mate, they are listening to only his songs whole day today, and i guess that’s the same scenario in a lot of other Indian (and specially Bengali) houses too.
Manna Dey, perhaps the most versatile and soulful of our legendary singers will be missed forever and personally i feel the void as I will never ever get to see any of the six legendary singers sing live in a studio or stage.
My personal favorites of Manna Dey like Jhanak Jhanak Tore Baje Payalia, Ae Meri Zohra Jabeen, Chalat Musafir Moh Liya, Chunari Sambhal Gori, Mud Mud Ke Na Dekh, Yeh Raat Bheegi Bheegi, Pyar hua iqrar hua are playing on repeat mode.
Thank You… Manna Dey !!!
